In July 1985, a world wide effort was undertaken to raise money to help fight hunger and famine around the world. Live Aid was a collaboration between many actors, artists, and entertainers such as Chevy Chase, Don Johnson, Cher, Bette Midler, Jeff Bridges, Eric Clapton, Ozzy Osbourne, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Page, Tom Petty, Mick Jagger, Patti LaBelle, Run DMC, Neil Young, REO Speedwagon, Carlos Santana, and yours truly – culminating in one day of concerts around the world. The goal was to fight against hunger, and together we raised an estimated 100 million dollars for the cause.
On 20 February 1986, an additional benefit concert named Drive Aid was held in New York City, with all proceeds going to the Live Aid Foundation. The lineup included Joan Jett, Nils Lofgren and Darlene Love. Fresh off the Power Station tour, I performed at the Drive Aid event at Radio City Music Hall with a fantastic band — Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols on guitar, the Tower of Power horn section, Jim Keltner on drums, my longtime (and current) bandmate Nigel Harrison on bass, and on keyboards, Kevin Savigar along with – believe it or not – the man who produced my latest album the great Bob Rose!
A friend surprised me yesterday with some photos taken by photographer Bob Rizzuti that I had never seen before, and I simply had to share them with you… hope you get as much of a kick out of them as I did!
